How to Use an Online Timer

A complete guide to getting the most out of GoClasstime's free countdown timer, stopwatch, and world clock.

    Getting Started: Your First Timer

Using GoClasstime takes less than five seconds. No sign-up, no download, no app install. Open the site and your tools are immediately available. Here's the fastest path to running your first timer:

    1. Visit goclasstime.com from any browser on any device
    2. Click the Timer tab at the top of the page
    3. Click one of the preset buttons: 5 Min, 15 Min, 30 Min, or 1 Hour
    4. Press Start — your countdown begins immediately
    5. Press Pause to pause mid-countdown, or Stop to reset

That's it. The timer continues running even if you switch to another browser tab, so you can keep working without watching the countdown.

    Setting a Custom Timer Duration

If the preset times (5, 15, 30, or 60 minutes) don't match your needs, you can set any duration from 1 to 59 minutes using the custom time dropdown:

    1. In the Timer tab, locate the "Set custom timer" dropdown
    2. Click the dropdown and select any minute value from 1 to 59
    3. The timer will update to show your chosen duration
    4. Press Start to begin the countdown

For common durations, we also offer dedicated timer pages: 25 minute timer, 45 minute timer, and more.

    Using Fullscreen Mode for Classrooms

GoClasstime's fullscreen mode is specifically designed for classrooms, presentations, and group settings where the timer needs to be visible from a distance:

    1. Set your desired timer duration using the presets or custom selector
    2. Click the Fullscreen button in the top-right area of the page
    3. The timer expands to fill the entire screen with giant numbers
    4. Start the timer — it will be clearly visible from the back of any classroom
    5. Click Go Back Home (top-left corner) to exit fullscreen

The fullscreen timer retains all controls — you can still pause, reset, and change the duration without leaving fullscreen mode.

    How to Use the Stopwatch

The stopwatch tab lets you measure elapsed time with lap tracking — useful for sports, science experiments, and productivity measurement:

    1. Click the Stopwatch tab at the top of the page
    2. Press Start to begin counting up from zero
    3. Press Lap at any point to record a split time — the stopwatch keeps running
    4. Press Pause to temporarily stop the count
    5. Press Reset to clear the time and all recorded laps

Lap times are shown in a list below the stopwatch, displaying both the total elapsed time and the individual lap duration (+time).

How to Use the World Clock

The World Clock tab shows live time in multiple cities simultaneously. It's useful for remote teams, international calls, and studying time zones:

    1. Click the World Clock tab
    2. Several cities are shown by default — each updates in real time every second
    3. Click Add City to add any city from the available list
    4. Your added cities are saved automatically and will still be there when you return
    5. Click the × on any city card to remove it from your view

    Tips for Using Timers Effectively

    • Write down your task first

Before starting a timer, write one sentence describing exactly what you'll accomplish. This prevents the common habit of "starting the timer first and figuring out what to do next."

    • Keep the tab visible

Pin the GoClasstime tab or use fullscreen mode. Seeing the countdown creates positive time pressure that helps you stay on task.

    • Honor the boundaries

When the timer ends, stop — even if you're mid-sentence. This trains your brain to work intensely during the session and fully rest during breaks.

    • Start with shorter sessions

If you're new to timed work sessions, start with 10 or 15 minutes rather than 60. Build up the duration as you get comfortable with the rhythm.
